Morgan Galbraith is a journalism student at the University of Arizona and will be interning for FOX Sports Northwest at Safeco Field this season. An avid baseball fan, Morgan caught up with The Beerguy after a recent spring training game at Tucson Electric Park. When did you get started? 1995 Coors Field Denver Typically the public sees vendors at the game, purchases a beer from them and then they are forgotten, but you're different...Everyone remembers you. When did this fame begin for you? When did you decide to make this job your career? Is this your career ? What makes you different from all of the other vendors besides the obvious? I have been involved with baseball in one form or another for 47 years. When I started this, I had a pretty good idea of what a good beer vendor would be like, so I created a character that would accomplish that. I cannot speak for others who do this same job. Selling beer at ballgames as STB is one of many things I do to earn a living. Best memories? There are too many to list. Best part of your job? Good baseball fans Is Scooter you real name? Full name? Scooter the Beerguy is a character...like "Larry the Cableguy" The guy who plays LTCG is not LTCG and I am not STB What are you feelings about Tucson possibly losing spring training? What does that mean for you? Tucson spring training has been going on since 1947. Losing it is a tragedy. What it means for the Beerguy is the end of an era. If we decide to move to Phoenix, we'll be starting all over from scratch. How did the beer line get started? In 1998. Staying connected to our steady customers via pager was a good idea. To this day, the pager is still the best way for the BeerLine to operate...they're hard to find nowadays... Where else have we seen you? Have we heard your voice on TV? Radio? 2004 RedHook Brewery radio spots, Tucson TV commercials...we'll be doing more. Are you a one man team, or do you have a team of people working with you? At TEP the vendors are supported by a cashier and a loader...both of whom do a terrific job. The vendors work for the concessionaire...SportService. They are great people to work for. Why serve beer? Beer Is interwoven into the fabric of a Big League ballpark. The Beer Vendor is, and always has been, an icon within that environment. It is also our responsibility to see to it that the activity is carried out safely...and that is something we take very seriously. Why Tucson? Why didn't you go anywhere else for Spring Training? The Rockies train in Tucson and that is how we got here. We stay here because the quality of the baseball fans here is outstanding. Are you from Tucson? I currently reside in Seattle WA Most common quotes we will hear from you? "Beer Here"!!! What is next for Scooter the Beerguy? Opening Day, Safeco Field...Mariners-Angels Favorite Team? Our Favorite team is the team that signs the paycheck. STB is a hired gun. Percentage wise, how many people (ticket holders) do you recognize on a first name basis at TEP games? Remembering names is an integral component of the act. There are tricks available to be able to do that. It's part of the job. What is your favorite beer? Redhook, right? Favoring one beer over the other would be unfair to the other beers not chosen in the tub. Unless of course we are being paid to do so... Why baseball games, why not basketball or any other sport? We also work the Seattle Seahawks. With the other work I do, working more sports or events would be problematic schedule wise. Anything else? That about covers it...Thank you Morgan! |
